Website Indexing

Website indexing is the process by which search engines (Google, Yandex, etc.) scan a website’s pages, add them to their database (index), and make them available for display in search results. It is precisely due to indexing that users can find your site through search queries.

What is Indexing?

When a search engine robot (e.g., Googlebot or YandexBot) visits a website, it scans (crawls) all pages, links, and content. Afterward, the system analyzes the information and adds the pages to its index — a kind of library of all discovered websites.

Indexing is the “recording” of a website into a search engine’s database so it can later be shown to users in search results.

Stages of Website Indexing

  1. Crawling. The robot explores the site, follows links, and reads text, images, tags, and code.
  2. Content Analysis. Algorithms assess page quality: text, structure, links, headings, loading speed, mobile adaptation.
  3. Adding to the Index (Indexing). If the page is not blocked and meets the requirements, its content is entered into the search database.
  4. Ranking. After entering the index, the page receives a position in search results — depending on its relevance to queries and SEO quality.

How to Check if a Site is Indexed

  • Google: Enter in the search bar: site:example.com. If you see a list of pages — they are indexed.
  • Yandex: Use the command: host:example.com or check via Yandex.Webmaster → Indexing → Pages in Search.
You can also check the status in Google Search Console or Yandex.Webmaster.

Why a Site May Not Be Indexed

Reasons for pages not appearing in the index:

  • Incorrect robots.txt file (pages blocked from crawling).
  • The <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex”> tag — prohibits indexing.
  • 404, 500 errors, or incorrect redirects.
  • Duplicate content or low-quality text.
  • New site without backlinks — search engines simply haven’t found it.
  • Lack of internal linking.
  • Slow loading speed or poor mobile version.

How to Speed Up Indexing

  1. Add your site to Google Search Console and Yandex.Webmaster. This is the primary signal to search engines about a new resource.
  2. Create and submit a sitemap (sitemap.xml). Indicates which pages should be indexed.
  3. Configure the robots.txt file. Open important sections for crawling, close administrative ones.
  4. Use internal links. Robots follow them and find new pages faster.
  5. Publish unique and useful content. The higher the quality, the more frequently search engines return.
  6. Build external links (backlinks). If other sites link to yours, robots discover it faster.
  7. Remove duplicates and technical clutter. This improves the “cleanliness” of the index.
  8. Use the lastmod attribute in the sitemap. Helps the search engine track page updates.

How to Check Page Status

  • Google Search Console → “Coverage” Report (Index Coverage Report):
    • Indexed — page is in the index.
    • Excluded — excluded (e.g., duplicate, redirect, noindex).
    • Crawled – currently not indexed — scanned but not yet added.
    • Error — crawling errors.

What Affects Successful Indexing

  • Content quality and uniqueness.
  • Website loading speed (Core Web Vitals).
  • Absence of technical errors.
  • Presence of HTTPS.
  • Mobile optimization.
  • Regular content updates.
  • Link profile and domain authority.

Useful Tools

  • Google Search Console — analyzing page status and requesting re-indexing.
  • Yandex.Webmaster — checking index coverage.
  • Screaming Frog / Sitebulb / Ahrefs — technical audit.
  • PageSpeed Insights — checking speed and optimization.

How to Know if a Site is Being Indexed Correctly

  • New pages appear in search results within 1–5 days.
  • Old content updates are reflected in search within 1–2 weeks.
  • The number of indexed pages gradually increases.
  • There are no errors in Search Console or robots.txt reports.

Conclusion

Website indexing is the foundation of SEO. Without it, a site remains “invisible” to search engines. Proper technical setup, unique content, and regular updates help ensure fast and stable indexing.
