Assisted Conversions

Assisted conversions are conversions in which a marketing channel participated in the user’s path to purchase but was not the last source before the conversion.

Simply put:
The channel helped bring the customer to the purchase, even if it didn’t “close” it directly

How it works

A user may interact with a brand through several channels:

  • saw an ad on social media,
  • later clicked from an email,
  • then came through search and made a purchase.

In this case:

  • search may get the last conversion,
  • social media and email will be counted as assisted conversions.

Why analyze assisted conversions

They help to:

  • understand the true contribution of each channel,
  • avoid underestimating the top of the funnel (TOFU).
  • allocate marketing budget correctly,
  • analyze the customer journey.

Where they are used

  • Google Analytics,
  • multi-touch attribution,
  • performance marketing,
  • omnichannel analytics.

Which channels often generate assisted conversions

  • display advertising,
  • social media,
  • YouTube,
  • email marketing,
  • content marketing.

These channels often influence the decision but are not always the last touchpoint.

Difference from last-click conversion

  • Last-click conversion — the last channel before purchase
  • Assisted conversion — the channel participated in the path but was not the last

Example

Customer journey:
Instagram → Google Search → PurchaseGoogle Search = last-click conversion
Instagram = assisted conversion

Why this matters

Without analyzing assisted conversions, you might mistakenly conclude that some channels “don’t work,” even though they actively influence the decision-making process.

Key takeaway

Assisted conversions show which channels helped the user arrive at a purchase at different stages of the customer journey. This metric is especially important for multi-channel marketing and accurate attribution.
